Understanding the role of women in slavery is an important part of history that is hardly mentioned in textbooks. Women slaves played a key role in the development of slave communities through the development of African Sexuality, Family Structure and Economic Productivity. This article provides a great amount of detail on how women slaves were looked at during that time period. It is amazing to read about how belittled women slaves were. People looked down upon them so much and only looked as them for someone who should reproduce. They were looked at as unmoral and only seen as a "sex drive."
I found this very interesting. I didn't know that African American women slaves were looked at as if the lacked modesty and that some Europeans looked at women as rugged and animal-like just because of their facial features. I find that degrading on all terms because even though we are in the 21st century, women are just judged based on their looks and body shapes.
ReplyDeleteIts crazy to see how black women were viewed back in the day. African women of slave descent were seen as women with no morals, and merely just as sex objects. In today's society it is rude and dehumanizing to see women as just some kind of sex object. It just shows how far we have come over the years, and how insensible people were to Africans in general.
